Multi-coloured pigeons at the Biennale
An art performance by artists Julian Charrière and Julius von Bismarck has seen the pigeons of Piazza San Marco painted in an array of colours
The installation ‘some pigeons are more equal then others’, by the collaboration of Julian Charrière and Julius von Bismarck, consisted of dying some of the piazza’s pigeons in shades of green, blue, red and yellow.

The artist explained the process of dying the animals in ‘pigeon apparatus’ on his website. ‘The machine works as a bird trap with a conveyor belt mechanism, once inside the machine the pigeon [is] automatically airbrushed in different colors.’
However, some people have questioned the ethics of the art installation and whether or not it is humane, no pigeons were harmed or tortured during the dying process.
