Alvaro Siza wins at Venice
Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement this morning at the Biennale’s award ceremony
David Chipperfield described Siza’s work as ‘a consistent production of works at the highest level… developing an architectural language that is uniquely his’, pointing at works such as Siza’s Boa Nova Restaurant and the swimming pools at Leca de Palmeira.
Other prizes awarded include the Best Project award, given to Justin McGuirk and Venezuelan team Urban Think-Tank for their Torre David Installation and Café in Caracas, and the Best Pavilion award, given to Toyo Ito for the Japanese pavilion, which presents alternative housing proposals for families affected by the tsunami in 2011.
