US is light years ahead on pollution

S Pearson's letter (AJ 22.5.03) regarding lighting pollution is the first time I have seen any reference to this issue in the UK.

It was already an issue in the US more than 30 years ago, where there were prohibitions against casting light directly across property boundaries.

A good selection of external light fittings with appropriate shields was also available at that time, which as Pearson points out is still lacking in the UK.

Manufacturers should respond to this need.
