Manchester developer Urban Splash has shortlisted 10 leading practices for its latest development in Walsall. Alsop Architects, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris and Erick van Egeraat Associated Architects are among those competing for the chance to design a 6.9ha site along the city's waterfront.
Urban Splash chose the frontrunners from more than 121 expressions of interest. The developer is also behind Alsop Architects' plans for Manchester's New Islington district and Foster and Partners' residential scheme in Budenberg in Altrincham, Cheshire.
The judging panel includes RIBA presidentelect George Ferguson, Adam Caruso and Urban Splash chairman Tom Bloxham. Bloxham said the judges had chosen a cross-section of practices rather than just the big international entries. The 10 will submit initial design concepts by the end of February, with the final winner chosen in April.
The 10 are: Allford Hall Monaghan Morris;
Alsop Architects; Erick van Egeraat Associated Architects; dsdha; Lab Architecture Studio; Maccreanor Lavington Architects with Kees Christiaanse Architects and Planners; Priestman Architects; Sergison Bates with East; S333 Architects; and Snøhetta and Spence.
