Underdog success in Liverpool fight

A relatively unknown practice has seen off some of the UK's largest offices to win an interview competition for the renovation of Liverpool City Library.

London and Cardiff-based Gaunt Francis, which employs just 10 architects, beat both Austin-Smith: Lord and Michael Hopkins and Partners, which were also shortlisted.

The project will include the refurbishment of the 1875 Picton Reading Room on William George Street, the construction of extensions and facilities, and the creation of a new entrance and public space.
