The Phoenix Initiative, Coventry


The Phoenix Initiative is the most important regeneration project for Coventry since the rebuilding of the city after its destruction during the war. It will provide major environmental improvements benefitting local residents, tourists and the student population. The principal objectives are to capitalise on the significant numbers of visitors to the cathedral, encouraging them to stay longer and spend more. This will be achieved by increasing the number of day visitors to the city centre, thus increasing total revenues for local businesses. The intention is to create a new journey through the city, both literally and meta-phorically. It will create a new sector with the potential to extend and amplify Coventry's standing as the city of international reconciliation, symbolised by the ruined and rebuilt cathedrals.
