I am writing to thank the many thousands of architects who took part in the recent Arts Council of England/riba Architecture Week. It was good to see interest and commitment spread throughout the country. Perhaps the most appealing thing about the week was the way architecture was taken into new venues and therefore reached new audiences. Some 10,000, for instance, viewed Liverpool from the top of St John's Beacon. Events also took place in bookshops, bars and galleries.
With comparatively few resources and little time, over 180 events were organised. This demonstration of the profession's commitment to opening up the building process by explaining their working methods, contrary to the suggestion in the last aj (News, aj 4.12.97) will be repeated in November 1998. I hope we can build on this year's success and involve and attract still more people next year.
