Sustainable Communities Plan to highlight good design

John Prescott was yesterday set to reveal details of his long-awaited Sustainable Communities Plan as the AJ went to press.

The proposals - aimed at 'creating truly sustainable communities in all regions' - will place particular emphasis on the importance of good design.

The £1.5 billion plans, first announced last July, were expected to include a density directive to increase levels of affordable housing in the South East, an emphasis on 'modular' housing and measures to improve public space and green space.Deputy Prime Minister Prescott was also set to produce detailed plans to improve the 1.5 million council homes in need of repair, and to revitalise communities in the North and the Midlands.

However, critics such as the Council for the Protection of Rural England have condemned the proposals as 'a bundle of contradictions' and warned that a massive area of greenfield land will be lost to urban development.
