Street-Porter rages against architect's over-spend on new home

Janet Street-Porter has launched a blistering attack against the 'cutting-edge architect' behind her new Clerkenwell home - known to be celebrity designer David Adjaye.

Street-Porter used her column in last weekend's Independent on Sunday to hit out at her architect for taking the project £100,000 over budget and four months late, but stopped short of naming him in print.

The self-styled design victim - 'or to put it another way, mug' - insisted she had the 'highest respect for brilliant architects and designers'.

'It's just that most of them never learn the meaning of one important word throughout their long and arduous training, ' she writes. 'That word is ficheapfl, followed by the phrase their jaws are not programmed to work and their brains are incapable of comprehending, fisticking to the budgetfl.'

The Independent on Sunday's editor-at-large, having publicly vented her spleen, clammed up when approached by the AJ.

She refused to state publicly the identity of the unnamed architect and denied she would take legal action.

David Adjaye's office, however, confirmed that the project was due for completion within the next few weeks. Adjaye himself was in Los Angeles this week and unavailable for comment.
