Solar gains

astragal

Solar shading is one of those clichés of contemporary buildings which we all know is jolly laudable, feelgood, makes people's working environments better, etc. But did you know that it can save money, and not just by cutting down on cooling bills?

Some supermarkets discovered that when the sun shone directly on their tills, their EPOS (electronic point of sale) systems packed up.

The only solution, as queues backed up at busy times, was to give people the contents of their bulging trolleys in exchange for some small change. Then they put in solar shading and, hey presto, their profits were restored to their usual levels. What a happy ending.
