Shortlisted projects
The Jewel Box, London by Fraher Architects (2010) Cost: £250,000. A renovation and dining extension of a Grade-II listed house in a conservation area for a silversmith and a QC.
Stealth Barn, Norfolk by Carl Turner Architects (2011) Cost: £30,000. A barn-like, self-contained guest house, studio and meeting place in the Cambridgeshire fens.
Capel Manor House Guest Pavilion, Horsmonden, Kent by Ewan Cameron Architects (2011) Cost: £245,000. A pavilion with two separate guest suites on the grounds of Capel Manor House, an iconic 1960s pavilion designed by architect Michael Manser.
Elegant Shed 2, London by William Tozer Architecture and Design (2011) Cost: £113,000. Two derelict garden sheds transformed into a studio and a greenhouse.
Titan Crane Visitor Centre, Glasgow by Collective Architecture (2011) Cost: £120,000. An exhibition space, learning area and cafe at the base of the Titan Crane visitor attraction.
Old Workshop, London by Jack Woolley (2011) Cost: £232,000. A run-down carpenter’s workshop set behind an old wall is converted into a split-level live/work space with a subtle, yet dramatic new entrance.
V&A Lecture Theatre, London by NISSEN RICHARDS studio (2011) Cost: £50,000. Refurbishment of the Grade-I listed lecture theatre at the Victoria & Albert Museum, including new decorative acoustic lining designed in consultation with English Heritage.
Skerrie House, Anstruther, Fife, by Oliver Chapman Architects (2011) Cost: £160,000. A rear extension to a 19th century fishing cottage facing the sea provides a new living room and kitchen under a folded oxidised copper roof.
Artist's Workshop, London by Carmody Groarke (2010) Cost: £35,000. The artist Antony Gormley, who works predominantly in metal, required more space to store raw metal materials. This robust garage-like building, clad in hot-dipped galvanised steel, is within the yard of his London studio.
Denton Road House, London by AAVA (2011) Cost: £165,000. A two-bedroom house on a small piece of land in London, the entrance is through a discreet gate into a private courtyard.
The Water Tower, Kettering by Baynes and Co. (2011) Cost: £124,000. Moving the staircase out of the existing water tower and into a new building created enough space for a bedroom, bathroom, study and entrance foyer.
Publishers Hideaway, London by Alma-nac (2010) Cost: £15,000. A mezzanine space and staircase is converted into a compact bedroom, with a solid storage unite that includes bookcase, cupboards and closet.
Denizen Sauna, Åland by Denizen Works + Friends (2011) Cost: £3,465. Constructed on a holiday island between Finland and Sweden in just nine days.
Coed Gwern Bird Hide, Machynlleth by CAT Professional Diploma Students (2011) Cost: £1,500. All the timber for this student-built project was sawn and processed within 500 metres of the site.
Times Eureka Pavilion, Richmond, Surrey by NEX (2011) Cost: £70,000. The design was developed using algorithms which replicate leaf capillaries.
House and Office, 1 West Annandale Street, Edinburgh by Tim Bayman Architecture (2011) Cost: £73,559. Renovation that restores natural light to a building which had remained in the shadows since its conversion to residential use in 1984.
The Lanes by Mole Architects, Cambridge (2011) Cost: £114,000. This larch-clad extensuion transformed an unprepossessing 1960s bungalow in Cambridgeshire.
Ecclesall Woods Container Retreat, Sheffield by Sheffield School of Architecture Live Project (2011) Cost: £1,150. The project disguises a large storage container while creating a teaching space ontop of it.
Lammas, Cley-next-the-Sea by Hudson Architects (2010) Cost: £185,000. Extension to a 1960s two-bedroom house.
Jay Mews, London by Theis+Khan (2011) Cost: 245,000. Refurbishment to extend and modernise an existing first-floor flat in a mews in west London
Blundells Avenue Housing, Devon by Mitchell Taylor Workshop (2011) Cost: £180,000. Designed and built for £60,000 each these three homes are intended to show there is an alternative to developer estate housing.
DRI DRI _ SML, London by Elips Design (2011) Cost: £12,500. Pop-up Italian ice-cream stall in the front room of St Martins Lane Hotel, London.
Wilberforce Annex, London by Jonathan Tuckey Design (2011) Cost: £135,000. Creche and after-school centre designed so that it could be bult by a local builder and joiner with minimal use of heavy machinery.
OSA/Merzen, Manchester by Office for Subversive Architecture (2011) Cost: £21,000. Installation at Manchester's CUBE Gallery based on artist Kurt Schwitters' 'Merz' collage technique, in which he rearranged collected objects such as paper, timber and wire.
