Shanghai surprise

So there we were thinking that the biggest threat to the world's great cities from global warming was flooding.

Well, it would seem we were wrong. It has emerged this week that the underground freshwater reserves of many of these great conurbations, including Shanghai, are at risk from the rising sea levels. If these reserves are flooded, it is predicted people will be forced to desert their homes, turning them into 'ghost cities'. Bad luck for Will Alsop, who last week revealed his plans for a 250m observation tower in Shanghai itself. Everyone's favourite blob merchant is due a bit of good fortune, surely?
