Forgotten Spaces: The Performance of Forgotten Space by Kingston University

Croydon is a often cited as an example of chaotic town planning where a series of ‘masterplans’ only complicated dysfunctional construction rather than resolved earlier shortcomings. Contradictions of scale and idiosyncratic design abound in an environment where the infrastructure has priority over human activity.

Kingston Universityaims to resolve some of these problems by giving a human and artistic dimension to the town. The scheme will use left-over and backspace land for new public spaces, that will help reconnect disjointed parts of the town. It will bridge the high street and the modern shopping centre and create new public courtyards, cafes, and a 600-seat live music auditorium.

A significant feature is the Public Square, a meeting point of many routes through the town. The design takes into account the square’s working nature as well as it being an important meeting point. Live bands and buskers are envisioned, as are festive events and work-break strolling. Materials are a mix and collage of different types of existing brick to built on rather than yet again reinvent Croydon’s patchwork past.
