Forgotten Spaces 2011 shortlisted: West Way by Moxon Architects
[Paddington] A proposal to transform space around the A40 viaduct into useful piece of city that takes advantage of the glamorous and beautiful existing spaces while imbuing them with a rich set of new functions.
This project explores the linked sequence of spaces at the confluence of Regents Canal, the elevated sections of the A40 between Paddington Green and Meanwhile Gardens and The Great Western Railway approaches to Paddington Station.
Despite the obvious shortcomings of land below and being adjacent to the viaduct there are opportunities for useful concentrations of built volume intermingled with the infrastructure. If these sites can be exploited to their maximum potential, perhaps requiring the quid pro quo development of community and landscape interventions a new concentration of activity could be inserted.
