Forgotten Spaces Sheffield 2011: Shortlist – Wicker Spice by Oliver Peach
Wicker Spice seeks to utilize the common ground of the love of food to re-cement a strong positive community identity
The Wicker and Burngreave has historically been known for its diverse mix of cultures and nations. Yet the tough economic times has meant that the community has struggled with a lack of identity as a continual influx of differing immigrants created pockets of segregation within the area.
A proposal is needed that unites these different nationalities and once again celebrates this mix of cultures. An appreciation of food transcends class, religion and culture.
This proposal seeks to utilize this common ground by combining redundant historical knowledge of the brewing industry and spices that reflect the nationalities of the redundant structure within Sheffield’s history but also creates a ‘place’ that engages with the local people and re-cements a strong positive community identity within the city of Sheffield.
