Forgotten Spaces Sheffield 2011: Shortlist – Watersmeet Centre by Alex Mingozzi and Mihalis Walsh

View of Watersmeet Allotment Centre from riverbank level; a building to support and bring together neighbouring allotment groups, located over the confluence of two rivers at Malin Bridge

The proposal is for an allotment centre at Malin Bridge, sitting over the confluence of the Rivelin and Loxley rivers.

It provides a series of spaces and facilities to be shared by the neighbouring allotment communities, where they may come together and interact with others in the area including aspiring urban gardeners, hikers, local residents and local retailers.

Arranged over three floors, the building is accessed at street level directly off Malin Bridge, where there is a community café, tool store and tool hire room, seed bank and seasonal produce store.

On the upper floor, three meeting and event spaces are orientated to face out towards and capture views of the valleys stretching out from Malin Bridge, as well as a shared office space and roof gardens filled with accessible planters.

At riverbank level the stairs and lift provide access for all to this beautiful and secluded “island” site.
