Forgotten Spaces Sheffield 2011: Shortlist – ‘Always Something New’ by Jono Burgess
This project explores the notion of consumer culture, expressing a symbolic counterpoint and journey from the neighbouring site that is Meadowhall
This project seeks to engage people through habitat, exploration and discovery in an urban wilderness; a place where Silver Birch and Purple Nightshade prise through cracks in bricks and concrete.
The remnant structure of an advertisement hoarding provides the destination in a journey and expresses the sentiment in this project; it is re-used as the centre of a bat feeding ground, the surrounding fragmented woodland enables wildlife habitat aiming to strengthen bat numbers in the area.
The structure could be described as a cathedral to consumerism in the shadows of Meadowhall shopping centre. This forgotten space seeks to be found spontaneously as an impromptu form of recreation for people. Once people discover the site they will have freedom to explore, using their own instincts, subtly guided by pathways. In a strange way consumer culture has spawned the re-creation of structure and space in this project.
