Forgotten Spaces 2011 shortlisted: Station Farm by Roundfield (Tom Barnsley and James Hallybone)

[Croydon] A vision for the productive use of the ‘Ruskin Square’ site awaiting development comprisingan urban community farm and outdoor events space linked to the rejuvenated Warehouse Theatre

The proposed ‘meanwhile’ scheme dares to imagine the good use this prime piece of land could be put to in the next 5 to 10 years whilst the site is being prepared for phased construction.

Proposals are two-fold: provide a community urban farm at the heart of the site and revitalise the existing theatre by creating an events space at the southern end of the farm. Local community and food production are the central themes of the design which takes full advantage of the excellent location for its productive potential.

Proposals include allotments, an orchard, animal enclosures, wildflower/sunflower meadows, and picnic areas. Access from the station concourse is achieved via a ramp with terraced seating overlooking the new events space. A key east-west link is provided by the new footbridge over the rail tracks. The ‘farmstead’ is situated at the hub of the farm adjacent to this important new link that provides connections to the city beyond.
