Forgotten Spaces 2011 shortlisted: Rye Lane by Ben Whitehead
[Southwark] View of the Car-park redevelopment from the south showing a section slice through the railway arches, gallery atrium, and inserted flats. The rooftop sculpture park is also seen in use.
The disused Peckham Rye Multi Storey Car Park occupies a well-connected, yet rarely accessed site. The site is able to provide a multi-programme proposal that supports local artistic and communities while also acting as a catalyst for the regeneration of the area through the transfer of an underutilised public asset to a new community interest company, to address local economic, social and physical issues.
It will create a new artistic community
Incisions through the existing structure are used to create new public connections and shared courtyards. A mix of up to ninety 1-3 bedroom flats are ‘plugged’ into the retained structure.
A street front ’ light beacon’ visible from the station draws in visitors and entices them up onto a new rooftop permanent public exhibition and performance space. A central ramped gallery space and a series of street level studios will create a new artistic community that sustains the roof-top space.
