Forgotten Spaces 2011 shortlisted: Play & Grow by Studio-HG (Rebecca Haines-Gadd)
[City of London] Utilizing the space created by a 1980’s addition to the Barbican this project proposes a combined nursery, pre-school and a series of conservatory greenhouses
Brandon Mews is a residential block which forms part of the Barbican Estate in the City of London. After its completion it was discovered that the roof of the flats leaked to such an extent that a secondary roof was installed to mitigate this. This intervention has created a highly accessible yet unused space here.
Offering help and support for local families and young children
The aim of this proposal is to utilize this space to provide a 0-5yrs centre, offering help and support for local families and young children, with a nursery and pre-school to provide additional childcare for the local residents.
In addition, integrated into the structure are a series of greenhouses for the local residents use. To achieve this the existing roof will be replaced in order to create a more flexible and adaptive space below, and to visually revitalize this area of the Barbican Estate.
