Forgotten Spaces 2011 shortlisted: Jumpers for Goalposts by GRID Architects

Newham in East London, on the Eastern fringe of the new Olympic Park, is a deprived borough which the Olympic Games legacy is set to regenerate. However, with a twenty-five year legacy to complete and the projected reduction in funding, a generation may pass before the benefits of this regeneration can be seen.

As construction of the Olympic Park progresses it has become necessary to expand and ‘borrow’ playing fields and pitches from the surrounding areas, reducing access to recreation spaces for the local community. Our proposal seeks to reimagine small, unused pockets of space in the local neighbourhood with the introduction of readily available, low cost infrastructure. By enabling ‘doorstep’ sports such as Grass Verge Tennis, Laneway Longjump and Side Street Sprinting, Newham could continue to encourage sports participation, local ownership of space, and community cohesion, all through the simple addition of ‘Jumpers for Goalposts’.
