Forgotten Spaces 2011 shortlisted: (IN)Spires by Alex Scott-Whitby

[City of London] A live project creating a series of low rent creative studios for a new generation of St Jerome’s

(IN)Spires is a live project. The proposed scheme intends to occupy 38 of the 51 Church spires within the City of London. Working with the Diocese of London an agreement has been reached to turn the disused belfry’s of the City of London’s church spires into low rent studios for a new generation of creative St Jerome’s.

A thriving network of creativity enlivening what was otherwise a series of forgotten spaces

The proposed spaces will over a 30 year timescale become a thriving network of creativity enlivening what was otherwise a series of forgotten spaces within the engine room of the UK’s economy. The successful applicants will be asked to act as both curate and curator of their spaces and it is hoped that this new network will grow into a global movement of creative people nesting within other forgotten monuments and thus giving these spaces a new civic relevance.
