Forgotten Spaces 2011 shortlisted: Brunel’s Café by Aurelie Pot
[Lambeth] Brunel’s café will offer inhabitants of the greater London community some of the most stunning views of the capital and the unique experience of eating and drinking in the middle of the Thames
The site chosen is the inside of the southern pillar of the Hungerford Bridge, which contains a large space that became redundant shortly after its construction, and the two platforms standing on either side of the pillar, which were added when the Golden Jubilee Bridges were built.
A café is proposed at this emplacement. It will offer inhabitants of the greater London community some of the most stunning views of the capital and the unique experience of sitting in the middle of the Thames. The café will be accessed via the Golden Jubilee Bridges. The considerable footfall along the bridges and the South Bank, combined with the unique experience the café will offer, will ensure that the café is always busy.

Floating reed islands surrounding the platforms will offer an ever changing landscape. Due to their design the canopies will appear weightless, lightening the existing Hungerford Bridge as the Golden Jubilee Bridges have done before.
