Forgotten Spaces 2011 shortlisted: A Bit of Peace and Quiet by de Rosee and Sa
[Hammersmith & Fulham] A quiet place to rest in the city; a simple concept aimed at countering a deficiency in tranquil spaces
Our proposal focuses on maintaining and enhancing the tranquil nature of the centre of the roundabout. A dense wall of nature creates an acoustic barrier behind which sits a hidden terraced garden.

The terrace form is taken from that of an ancient theatre, allowing the formation of a large yet intimate space. From within the garden all that is visible is the sky above against the soft border of the giant hedge. The scale of the surrounding green wall is such that it will dispense of the remaining noise generated by the traffic outside. At the base of the terrace is a pool of water, which promotes calm, but also encourages interaction. Paddling and dipping of one’s toes in the water is actively encouraged.
