In the fast lane Fasteners from SFS Intec have been used for a new-build project for Kelsey Roofing Industries at the 11,000m2 Asda superstore in Stevenage. SFS supplied Kelsey with SDK fasteners to ensure a longterm quality fix for the Kalzip roofing system. Corrosion-resistant stainless-steel Irius fasteners were used for the cladding panels, which are less obtrusive and more durable than alternative options.

Fabric stretches to keep shoppers dry Working closely with property-development company Applied Solutions, Fabric Architecture has designed a 125m-long tensile fabric walkway connecting 125m of retail outlets at St Andrew's Quay Retail Park in Humberside. The cantilevered design creates a visual continuity between shops, and the openings of the walkway can thereby be centred to the doors and not to the building grid.

Lightweight blocks speed building process London's Leyton Mills Retail Park has made extensive use of Thermalite aircrete blocks for their high-strength and lightweight properties.
More than 7,000m2 of Hi Strength 7 and Hi Strength 7 Smooth Face blocks were used throughout the internal partition walls. The inner leaf of Smooth Face provides effective thermal protection and fire resistance. Easier to handle at half the weight of standard blocks, Hi Strength 7 blocks helped to speed up the building process, while still meeting the manual handling guidelines set out by the HSE.

Jeans clean up with hardcore vinyl floor Low-maintenance Polyflor XL PU heavy-duty vinyl tiles have been installed at Ice Jeans retail outlets around the UK. The polyurethane surface treatment improves soil-resistance and, Polyflor claims, can reduce cleaning costs by up to 24 per cent. It can be welded at the seams and to coved skirtings to create continuous surfaces that offer no sanctuary to dirt and bacteria. Polyflor XL PU comes in 300mm and 608mm 2tiles and 2m-wide sheets, is available in 24 colours, as well as 1.5mm and 2mm gauges to suit different tracking levels.

Cardiff IKEA puts others in the shade Working under the Part L guidelines, Levolux and Stubbs Rich Architects have designed a horizontal and vertical shading system to protect the glazed entrance of the new IKEA store in Cardiff from overheating. Levolux installed two sections of 400mm aerofoil fins at a pitch of 500mm and designed bespoke 11m-high vertical fins, individually mounted on steel columns. These blades are painted in bright yellow to contrast with the blue elevations.The IKEA project took just 38 weeks to complete, beating all other IKEA construction records worldwide.

Sign of the Zodiaq Known by staff and shoppers as the Red Tunnel, the corridor leading to the new Superbrands department at Selfridges, Oxford Street, is clad in DuPont's Zodiaq surfacing material. Some 40m2 of low-maintenance Zodiaq in high-gloss Indus Red line the walls, floor and ceiling of the 10.2m tunnel, offering scratch, stain and impact resistance.
