To help architects make the most of the material, the organisation also offers a technical manual and CPD seminars.

FORSTER ECOSPACE Benefits stack up for library shelving Foreg 2000 mobile shelving systems, supplied by Ecospace, met Edinburgh University's requirements for safety and air circulation in its main library in George Square. The stacks, powder coated in white, are fitted with manually operated aisle locks and anti-tilt mechanisms. On the important Special Collection, shelves are 400mm and 600mm deep to accommodate larger items.

LEVOLUX Lesson in sustainability Home to the University of Newcastle Institute for Research and Sustainability, the six-storey Devonshire Building is constructed in a way that reflects the institute's commitment to the environment by using recycled materials, renewable energy and solar power. On the glazed southern elevation, Levolux 400mm aerofoil fins were fitted to steel bow trusses, motorised to operate in banks and controlled by light sensors and a Levolux Multicontroller. Behind these, extruded aluminium J tread, walk-on brise soleil are attached to the steelwork.

COVER STRUCTURE Enlightened approach to classroom comfort Eight duo-pitch rooflights, 4.5m x 2m wide, and a central glazed pyramid from Cover Structure, now provide a light, airy atmosphere in the teaching space of Queen Elizabeth's School in Mansfield, Nottingham. The units were glazed with 6mm toughened anti-sun, grey-tinted outer panes and 6.4mm laminated clear inner panes.

GOODING ALUMINIUM Newcastle beats the drum for aluminium The flexibility of aluminium from Gooding Aluminium has allowed the creation of 3m circumference drum supports for an ultramodern reception desk in the main entrance of Charles Trevelyan College in Newcastle. The impact of Gooding's Impressional decorative panels is enhanced by having no visible joints.

BRETT MARTIN Express answer to roof replacement Fast and simple installation saw Brett Martin's Xlok Express panel glazing chosen to replace wired glass units at Linton Mead Primary School in south-east London. Installed on mansard roof areas over the main hall, staff room, classrooms, kitchen and link corridors, the aluminiumframed units are glazed in 16mm clear 'x' structure polycarbonate to give a U-value of 2W/m 2K and 82 per cent light transmission.

Most runs are fitted with top-hinged vents.

TRA Rafters take steps to resolve differences Sloping and stepped ceilings at the Discovery School in Kings Hill, Kent have been created using 240 mono-scissor trussed rafters with spans of up to 13m, produced by the Dover Trussed Roof Company. At the curved end of the building, the rafters splay out from a central lightwell, before the roofline steps down to a more conventional pitched roof, requiring three different truss setups.
