PRACTICE PROFILE - ATKINS

CAREERS GUIDE

Location

Design studios across the UK, Middle East, China and India

Staff 16,000 worldwide 287 UK architects 600 (approximately) architectural staff worldwide What kind of work does the practice specialise in?

Atkins was founded in 1934. Since that time we have evolved from what was primarily an engineering consultancy into a broadbased, multi-disciplinary design group with architect Keith Clarke as chief executive. Our design studios worldwide have commissions in all sectors - leisure, commercial, education, residential, healthcare and transportation - and our projects range from individual buildings to massive masterplanning studies.

Recent successes?

We regularly appear in the Sunday Times 'Best big companies to work for' list. In the UK we won a 2006 Civic Trust award for Chancellor Park Primary School, Chelmsford, and a Sustainability Award for the DEFRA Headquarters in London. We have also had various competition wins for international leisure and mixed-use developments in the Middle East and Asia.

What benefits do you offer staff?

We help our staff create their own career path and assist with their training and CPD. Our studios host lunchtime seminars and offer many training opportunities. We offer local shop discounts and have a very active sports and social events programme, including theatre and exhibition trips and cultural visits to European cities.

Work/life balance is important to us so other benefits include a flexible annual-leave scheme and childcare vouchers.

Which CAD packages do you use?

We have our favourites - AutoCAD, MicroStation, ArchiCAD and SketchUp - but are constantly reviewing and updating new 3D and rendering packages.

1994 What do you like about working there?

I have enjoyed the transition of Atkins from an engineering and project-management company to a design-focused group of practices which interact with other more traditional parts of the business, such as our rail, water and nuclear divisions.

I get involved with many interesting projects.

I also like the diversity across the offices which creates a sound platform from which to initiate design. We have a great pool of young design talent who get involved in lots of different projects across the country and abroad.

2005 What do you like about working there?

I love the fact that I am involved in many different projects and dealing with the 3D design and graphic presentation all the way from the initial stages through to the working drawings for the tender packages. I have been attending design team meetings and coordinating information with the architects, structural and electrical engineers and quantity surveyors. It is giving me a thorough grounding in all aspects of the construction industry. At the same time my proficiency has greatly increased with all industry-standard CAD, 3D and graphics software during my time at Atkins.
