Kensington and Chelsea resident John McAslan was in the lucky position of being able to tell Tory leadership candidate Michael Portillo that he had chosen to vote for a far less likely proposition last week.

McAslan, who shared a few words with Portillo during a fund-raising expedition to the Volubilis project being designed by his practice in Morocco, told him he had voted for the candidate dressed as a crab. The crab's slogan was: 'Don't be selfish, vote Shellfish.' McAslan told Astragal: 'How could I vote for anyone else?'
