Sam Jacob: Underground Bunker

Sam Jacob of Fat Architecture selects the Underground Bunker

Brook Road, NW2 7DZ, Saturday 8.30am-5pm, pre-book only Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, 020 8782 4239 or katy.bajina@stadiumha.org.uk, free

It’s best to visit something that’s hard to see outside of Open House. I’d suggest the Underground Bunker in Neasden. On sleepy, suburban Brook Road you’ll find a steel door in what looks like a garage attached to some social housing. Behind is Churchill’s secret wartime bunker, code-named ‘Paddock’, a bomb-proof complex 12m below ground. It might be uglier than other places on the list, but it’s a piece of hidden London that more than compensates with its strange history.
