Jay Merrick: Dulwich Picture Gallery Mausoleum

Critic Jay Merrick selects the Mausoleum at the Dulwich Picture Gallery

Gallery Road, SE21 7AD, Sun 11am-5pm, free

The formal clarity and spatial conviviality of John Soane’s Dulwich Picture Gallery is wonderful. But its tincture, so to speak, is the tiny mausoleum. I seems as if it might almost have been abstracted from Soane’s house. The potent atmosphere of this space gives it the air of just the place to plight a troth, plan a murder or start a new religion.

Wren’s St Stephen’s Walbrook has more to do with purifications of geometry and light than the necessary imperfections of faith, but it is simply beautiful, and so ironically wedged up against a Starbucks: Wren’s first, and abiding love was astronomy.
