Over 40 years ago, the pugnacious architecture critic Ian Nairn was complaining about the number of London churches that were locked. Nairn would have welcomed the ready access that Open House gives to many of the capital’s churches – an opportunity to see how designers manipulate space, light, material and decoration in the service of one of architecture’s most serious agendas. The churches I’ve chosen are a cross-section from the last three centuries: Georgian, Victorian, and early modern. J L Pearson’s St Augustine’s is particularly fine.
