Alex Ely: Bart’s Hospital Great Hall

Alex Ely of Mae Architects selects Bart’s Hospital Great Hall

St Bartholomew’s Hospital, EC1A 7BE, Sun 11am-4pm, free

Designed by James Gibb in 1730, St Bartholomew’s Hospital is the oldest surviving hospital in England. The Baroque-style Great Hall will be open in the North Wing off the square. It beautifully illustrates what we can achieve in hospital architecture if we put our mind to it. The staircase leading up to it has two murals by William Hogarth. He took it upon himself to paint them, on learning that the hospital was planning to commission an Italian painter in order to prove English painting was equal to the task – hurrah!
