OPEN DOORS ARE AN OPEN INVITATION TO CRIME

LETTERS

Leave our doors open? Is Austin Williams living in cloud cuckoo land? ('Front door locks haven't changed much in 150 years', AJ 11.01.07. ) Of course if we leave our doors open today, the probability is that we won't be burgled (if you live out in the country, that is. In the city - no chance! ), but the nasty thing about statistics is that probabilities add up.

Leave your door open every day as you cycle to that game of cricket on the village green, and eventually the chances are that some nefarious person will half-inch the freshly baked loaf on your table and the bag of doubloons under your bed.

And you certainly wouldn't want that.
