Online information

The riba has announced that the library catalogue is now available on-line via its website www.riba.net and on the library subsite http://site.yahoo.net/riba- library.

This is a wonderful aid for architects and their librarians, writes Dor Pontin. The service is available at any time, any day of the week, for the cost of a local call to your Internet service provider.

Typical questions the site can answers are:

Which journals have covered our latest project?

What articles have there been on sustainability recently?

What was the title of that book on Renzo Piano? Who publishes it? How much does it cost?

What has been published recently on cinema design?

What is happening in Sydney, has anything been published on the Olympic buildings?

Has the dfee issued any recent publications on cdt provision which are available in the library?

Does the library hold the Egan report? Is it available for loan? Can I obtain it on-line?

What books do I have out on loan a the moment? Can I renew them?

Does the Photographs Collection hold images which could illustrate my next presentation?

Are there any slides available to hire to help with in-house CPD talks?

The issue of the AJ which I need is missing, can I order a colour photocopy of an article?

Tips for the site

Use the guides (print them off) to help you search the catalogues more effectively. They are listed under: 2. Information on the 'How to search the riba Library On-line Catalogue' page.

This is a library catalogue, it may look unfamiliar to some users - don't be deterred, take it slowly, it's worth persevering. For example, in the Biographical database one is instructed to enter people by Last name, Forename - as in the telephone directory.

Titles are easier to search as they do not have to be matched exactly.

Once you have found the publication you are interested in click the 'view' button for further details. There may, for example, be a direct link to a website from which the publication can be downloaded. riba publications such as the Stansfield Smith report on architectural education are available in this way.

Not all the Library holdings are listed on-line. If you can't find what you need contact them direct. Tel 0906 302 0444 RIBA members; 0906 302 0400 Non-members (both premium rate); Fax 0171 631 1802; Photographs Collection 0171 307 3627 or e-mail via the website.
