On the attack
The theme of 'resistance and independence' was explored in relation to its political meaning in former colonial and dominion regions. There was also another take on the resistance to Modernism that came through critiques, such as its failure to be understood by the general public - for example, in the US by Jane Jacobs, and in Europe by J³rgen Habermas. Such views attacked Modernism's rejection of the past, the wholesale standardisation of the built environment, and the lack of regional contexts in many schemes. Returning to the UK to read CABE's attack on the mediocrity of contemporary housing struck a chord.
