Resembling an eerie futuristic bee colony, this stool by Freedom of Creation actually introduces a whole new concept in lightweight, translucent and high-strength furniture. Imaginatively titled Honey Bunns, the stool has honeycomb-like structures and was created using stereolithographic construction - the rapid creation of 3D pieces using a computercontrolled laser that polymerises light-sensitive resins - and material from DSM Somos. The material, a ProtoTool ceramic-filled resin, provides transparency and superior humidity and heat resistance, replicating production-grade plastics such as polypropylene, polyethylene and ABS. The process provides the advantage of producing highly complex forms that are otherwise impossible to fabricate by machining or traditional moulding techniques.
