Office politics

Talking of commercial property, congratulations to Bennetts Associates, which has won the commission to redevelop a City site for Land Securities, the UK's biggest property company and not one to panic over short-term market fluctuations. The design replaces a monolith proposed by another practice, and will comprise a midrise tower and a series of other buildings, rather than one large lump. The good news is that Land Securities has bought into the sustainable design programme offered by Bennetts. As Rab Bennetts says in the Commercial Offices Handbook, edited by Tim Battle and launched last week, the business case about sustainability is less the savings on fuel bills, and more about productivity and low absenteeism resulting from a good environment.
