NORD was formed in June 2002 by directors Alan Pert and Robin Lee, both of whom previously worked at Zoo Architects in Glasgow.

Pert, a past winner of the Scottish Design Awards Young Architect of the Year, worked for GMW's Berlin office before joining Zoo, where he became a partner. Robin Lee, an architect who also studied sculpture at the Glasgow School of Art, worked with RMJM before joining Zoo.

He currently teaches architectural design at the Mackintosh School of Architecture. In 2003 Graeme McQuaker, who has also worked for RMJM and Zoo, set up the European office of NORD in Barcelona.
