NEW STAIR AND WINDOW, NORTH LONDON

SMALL PROJECTS / PART 1

Architect: Sanei Hopkins Architects

Cost: £30,000

This new staircase has been introduced into a semi-detached house; reinstating an original void that had been used to create extra floorspace when these two adjacent properties were united into a care home. Returning to domestic use, the holes in the party walls have been filled and the now-obsolete fire escape has been removed. The new window - running vertically across all three floors - is designed as a traditional timber-sash window; the bottom sash provides access to the rear garden from the house and the top sash is a means of ventilation. The stair guarding is formed of 5mm stainless-steel rigging cables, which are continuous for the full height of the stair and threaded into the top and bottom rails.
