The Department for Education and Employment has produced Building Bulletin 86 - Music accommodation in secondary schools, a design guide. The background to the publication is the fact that under the National Curriculum, music is now compulsory in Key Stage 3 (ks3) and optional in ks4. Coupled with the fact that teaching methods for music have changed significantly over the last 20 years, with a move from whole-class teaching to a mixture of whole-class, small-group and individual work, this means that there is an increasing requirement for music facilities.

This document aims to provide guidance for those called on to design these facilities. It covers: the music suite; individual spaces; furniture; services and environmental design; case studies; and, cost guidance. Available from the Stationery Office, it costs £16.95.
