Hoogovens has formed a partnership with Owens Corning to select and develop the first in a range of several insulation products - kal-therm. This high-performance glass mineral wool insulation quilt is now the company's recommended specification for use beneath kal-zipregistered as part of an integrated roofing system.
It has been added to the system in which all components are branded, quality-assured and guaranteed to be compatible.
Lightweight and easy to handle, kal-therm is non-combustible and non- hygroscopic. When used as part of a roof or wall it will retain its properties throughout the system's expected lifespan. It is dimensionally stable and both K and U-values are sustainable.
kal-therm is flexible in use, allowing for continuity of insulation across details, interfaces and elevations, thereby minimising the risk of thermal bridging; it works independently of the outer profile sheet and there is no risk of thermal shear, so extremely long sheets may be used over innumerable contours; and it is cfc and hcfc-free with minimal disposal costs at the end of the building's life. The insulation can be removed easily, independently of the other roof elements, and then recycled.
Following the introduction of the sx2 self-drilling, self-tapping, high- performance fastener for speed of installation, Hoogovens and SFS Stadler have introduced their second new product in the kal-fix range: the sdk Fastener.
It has been developed because of the increased use of structural decks beneath kal-zip.
The innovative fastener features an unusual head configuration capable of being driven only with its unique 'peg' drive, which collects bits in a hopper to prevent damage to vapour-control layers. It can be installed using a number of different kinds of power drills, cannot be overdriven and provides a long and secure fastening.
The sdk allows the site supervisor to see at a glance that all fasteners have been correctly driven. It is impossible to overtighten or strip the fastener.
Of greater importance is that test results have proved that the interface between the cone of the fastener and the patented st clip produces a gas- tight joint, further enhancing the kal-zip system's ability to provide an airtight roof, whether a simple dual pitch or complex curved and tapered sheet configuration.
The new sdk is already in use with team kal members Maurice Hill, Kelsey Roofing Industries and Grainger Building Services.
A louvre system has recently been added to the kal-form range of products. Designed for on-site self-assembly in flat-pack form to reduce the risk of damage in transit, it is also available as built-up panels. Uses are likely to include buildings which require high levels of ventilation, such as hospitals, power stations and industrial plants.
The louvre is manufactured in sections up to 3m x 3m, with mullions at a maximum of 1.2m centres to provide additional strength. All sizes are catered for using multiple sections for on-site assembly in linear form. The blades are speedlocked into position on the mullion with a nylon clip which can also be adapted to create a security louvre.
