New House, St Kilda, Melbourne, Australia, Harwood Architecture

Set in the funky seaside suburb of St Kilda, this house is the residence of the architect and his family. Completed in 2000, the house has four levels, comprising a semibasement studio, living room, bedroom and rooftop terrace.

A pure rectangle of striking red aluminium and glass appears suspended between ivy and precast concrete walls. Anodised aluminium was chosen as the cladding material for its luminescent surface and richness of colour, while also offering durability and economy.
