NEW HOMES BLOW

The number of affordable homes being built has fallen to its lowest level since records began in 1949 and by almost a third since 1997.

The figures - produced by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister - show 160,000 new homes were built in 2002 against an increase in the number of households by 220,000.
