Meeting cdm while maintaining the integrity of the roof
Since its introduction last year, Hoogovens' kal-safetrade mark Latchway System has generated almost 1000 enquiries from architects, other specifiers and building users, thanks to its five key features:
Safe, hands-free access for users
Positioning freedom, generally 5-7m
No additional steelwork required
No penetrations through the kal-zipregisteredroofing system
Suitable for retro-fit as well as new-build.
Much of the interest is no doubt due to the requirements of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994 (cdm), which states that designers have a duty, with regard to health and safety, to consider avoidance or reduction of any foreseeable risk to any person carrying out cleaning or maintenance work on a building. Incorporating a fall-arrest system at roof level is one method of meeting the new regulations.
But kal-safetrade mark also meets a number of other needs, so its development is in response to market-led demand from architects. There are stringent requirements for air-tighteness in many modern building types, and traditional fall-arrest systems which involve penetrating the roof make these more difficult to meet. They rely on secondary steelwork for support, which may be difficult, restrictive and costlier. kal-safetrade mark can be positioned anywhere without relying on any other means of support.
For these reasons it is also ideal for retro-fit and upgrading existing kal-zipregistered roofs should access requirements change. It can also be easily removed, or used on a temporary basis.
kal-zipregistered is designed to maintain the integrity of the roof, with no surface fixings whatsoever. This being the case, the last thing an architect wants to do is use any other fall-arrest system which might compromise the air- and water-tightness of the structure.
A strong, durable and flexible stainless-steel cable, 8mm 7 x 7 construction, is connected at each end to roof anchor brackets with standard Latchway Mansafe components. Intermediate roof anchor brackets are installed on the roof at appropriate centres to suit the design of the building, generally at 5-7m centres.
Workers wearing a full body harness attach themselves to the system with a TransFastner attached to the caribina of their energy-absorbing lanyard. The fastener glides smoothly along the stainless-steel cable and over the intermediate anchor positions, enabling hands-free operation with total flexibility of movement and in complete safety. Tasks can then be performed with maximum confidence, even in the most awkward of roof areas.
Stainless-steel roof anchors are connected to the kal-zipregistered sheets with aluminium clamps. The anchors are designed as shock absorbers so that they have the ability to deform during the application of dynamic loads, thus preventing damage to the roof sheets, while still ensuring that they are securely attached after a fall arrest. Replacement of the roof anchorage is a simple task should it have been used in a fall arrest emergency. The anchorage is available in standard electro-polished finish, or it can be colour-coated to ral/bs colours to match the colour-coated aluminium standing seam.
Tested to and categorised by bs en 795:1997 as a Class C anchorage system employing a horizontal flexible anchor line which does not deviate from the horizontal by more than 15degrees. Part of the Latchways Mansafe horizontal fall-arrest system which is subject to ec Certificate of Conformity No. ZB050/95 issued by dmt-Gesellschaft dated 1 November 1995.
Testing and certification
Each individual system is fully inspected and tested after installation and a test certificate is issued, valid for 12 months. To ensure its continued safe working, and to safeguard its life-saving potential, the system must be inspected and re-certified at intervals not exceeding 12 months - or after it has been used to arrest a fall.
