MCCHESNEY ARCHITECTS

DESIGNS ON KING'S CROSS

Ian McChesney

Three simple blocks are provided for the respective users: private, key worker and social. The high density required by the brief ruled out more intricate, informal diagrams; and so the aim was to provide a clear legible scheme with a strong identity. The three blocks fan out, reconciling the powerful curve of the railway to the north west with the formal arrangement of [proposed] Cubitt Square to the east. Each building is divided by naturally ventilated covered access ways, which means that all apartments enjoy opening windows to each side. Two new streets are created giving added permeability; the waving curves of the blocks provide fl uidity to both the new streets and internal access ways.
