Manchester International Convention Centre
The Convention Centre houses an auditorium with a raked floor, served by a heavy goods lift. A steelfaced sliding door in the north-west facade gives access to the lift.
The walls of the composite cast in situ concrete structure are of 300mm thick concrete faced with 75mm Lochabriggs red sandstone slabs, with a 75mm cavity.
The sliding door to the lift is top-hung on the outside face of the wall so as not to interfere with the action of the lift. Its composite construction reduces sound transmittance by 55 decibels.
Above the door is a canopy consisting of two layers of polyester powder-coated aluminium panels; a continuous 750mm deep upper panel which protects the sliding door gear and three 2 x 2.1m lower panels which shelter users and vehicles. The canopy support, a 210 x 267mm inverted T-shaped section, is suspended at one end from a single 42.4mm CHS tube fixed to a bolted bracket in the wall; at the other end it is bolted, with a welded flange, to a concrete column. At both wall and column fixing points the stone cladding is cut back to form a 'pocket' for the brackets.
A series of paired back-toback 100 x 65mm steel angles is fixed to the T-shaped section and rests on the nib of the sliding door lintel.
The upper panel lies on top of the back-to-back angles and a cavity tray is dressed over it to prevent rainwater running down the wall. The three lower panels are fixed to 30 x 30mm back-to -back steel angles which are in turn suspended from the upper angles by 30m diameter CHS rods. They tilt towards a gutter which runs below the sliding door gear.
