Pinball wizards: How to design and build amazing pinball tables in 24 hours

Teams from across the country were given just a day to create a pinball table as part of Hendzel + Hunt’s 24HR Design Challenge

In it’s fifteenth year Designersblock has occupied a formerly disused space under the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank centre to showcase young designers of furniture, lighting, textiles, ceramics, and illustration.

The highlight of the exhibition is the unveiling of the results of furniture designer Hendzel + Hunt’s 24HR Design Challenge. In its second year the event, as the name suggests, challenged teams of artists and designers to collaborate and create an object from scratch within 24 hours of receiving the brief.

This year’s challenge, which took place at Hendzel + Hunt’s Peckham based studio last month, was to design and make an entirely mechanical pinball machine from reclaimed materials.

The teams, who were invited from across the country and were not aware of the brief before they arrived, all created fully functional machines inspired by movie and literacy greats featured on Southwark’s blue plaques: Enid Blyton, Charlie Chaplin, Sax Rohmer (The Mask of Manchu), Boris Karloff (Frankenstein) and Edgar Wallace (King Kong).

Visit the exhibition to see two of the creations and to watch a documentary made at the challenge on a TV created especially for the event.

Designersblock, Southbank Centre, September 20th until September 23rd. Entry is free with pre registration
