Light touch

News that the Serpentine Gallery has abandoned, for the moment, its MVRDV scheme (which would temporarily envelop the existing structure) is not much of a surprise. The gallery seemed to have abandoned its light-touch summer pavilion programme when it asked Oscar Niemeyer to produce a design - a great building, but should it have had substantial below-ground construction? Perhaps the next pavilion, by lvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura, will see a return to the spirit of Toyo Ito.
