I write in response to Simon Baker's letter (AJ 22.02.07) regarding the Leeds Awards for Architecture. As a judge for the awards I visited all of the shortlisted and successful schemes. I firmly believe that the three winning schemes fully satisfied the criteria set for the awards and I think it would have been mean-spirited not to have recognised them with awards.

I do agree with Simon that Leeds is a fabulous city with huge potential. However, the Leeds Awards help 'raise the bar' through celebrating excellent buildings regardless of size or cost.
