Laughs to be had at the end of the pier show

Congratulations on a funpacked issue (AJ 29.5.03). Your timely tribute to the talented humorist Louis Hellman was outshone only by the entertaining piece on proposals for a new pier at Brighton.

The first, designed by AROS, illustrated a proposal for the wrong pier nearly a mile away, much to the consternation of its owners, particularly as it is highly successful and hasn't burnt down. The second scheme, by FAO (pictured), suggests the design team members have led very sheltered lives, for they have not realised it usually rains horizontally in Brighton, and for about five months of the year uses such as 'open-air' concerts would be unthinkable.

Please keep these proposals coming: we love them. After all, Brighton is a fun place.

John Wells-Thorpe, Brighton
